We invite you to attend our monthly meeting on the 4th Tuesday of every month at 7 PM in the Township Building.  During May, June, July, August, and September meetings start at 8 PM.  Your suggestions are welcome.

Nockamixon Township now has a Park and Recreation Plan which was adopted unanimously by the Board of Supervisors on August 29, 2006.

The Park and Recreation Board met monthly for a year with Paul Driscoll of Urban Research & Development to put together this Plan; and funding for its development was provided via a grant from the Department of Community and Business Development. A copy of this Plan is available for review at the township office during regular business hours. Also available is a map to take home of the Existing Park, Recreation and Open Space Lands.

As outlined in its introduction, the Nockamixon Plan and Recreation Plan was prepared to complement the overall development and preservation policies reflected in the 1999 Nockamixon Township Open Space Plan and the 2005 Nockamixon Township Comprehensive Plan Update. Adopting the Plan was important and timely for several reasons, including the following:

• To establish guidelines for future parks development, facility development and use policies, program service delivery and the operation and management of the parks and recreation system.

• To provide an overall strategy for both short-term and long-term development of the public recreation and open space areas in the Township. It will provide a foundation for decision making by the Nockamixon Township elected officials and Township committees.

• To outline specific goals and objectives for recreation services relative to existing and future development of land uses and community character, as well as program and service delivery.

• To inventory and set direction for parks and open space decision-making relative to the current status of the Township in the following areas: Demographics, Infrastructure and Community Services, Land Use/Availability, Economy, Environmental Resources, Historical and Cultural Resources, and Intergovernmental Cooperation.

• To enable the provision of recreation facilities, open space and programs and services that encourage a healthy and pro-active lifestyle, appreciation of natural resources, and enhance the quality of life of the Nockamixon community for both residents and visitors.

The terms “active recreation” and “passive recreation” appear at various places in this plan. Active recreation refers primarily to organized sports. Passive recreation refers to hiking, walking and a multitude of other ways people enjoy the outdoors informally without being part of a competitive athletic event.

VETERANS MEMORIAL PARK

Besides being home to Revere Baseball, Veterans Memorial Park offers a tot lot for young children; and is also available for picnic and private gatherings. We ask that you contact the Township office to fill out a brief application. Your gathering can be added to the schedule so it does not overlap with another event.

Thanks to Senator Wonderling, the Park and Recreation Board received a $10,000 grant from the Department of Economic and Community Development which was used to erect a new pole building at Veterans Memorial Park. This building will be used for storage as well as a snack stand.

Funding for the Park and Recreation Board is provided via private donations, grants, and fees charged to developers. Improvements to Veterans Memorial Park include the tot lot and pole building previously mentioned as well as a score board, new dug outs, back stops, fencing, electricity to the pavilion, maintenance equipment, bleachers, and picnic tables.

The Nockamixon Historical Society, in 2007, dedicated a historical marker at Veterans Memorial Park to commemorate Civil War Veteran Hiram W. Pursell’s courageous act of “Rescuing the Colors”. The Board of Supervisors helped fund this historical marker.

Other programs we look forward to are beautifying the Township with the planting of bulbs and perennials throughout the area; recording and photographing our bridges and waterfalls; and a wildlife program taping wild and domestic animals spotted or living in the Township. Pet owners are asked to submit history and pictures of their pets. Pictures of a bear spotted in Nockamixon Township in May of last year was the first submission.

Any one interested in donating time and/or pictures, please contact the Township office at
610-847-5058.
